| The Black Lung Benefits Act covers total disability claims of United States' miners suffering from pneumoconiosis (aka black lung disease), which was contracted due to their employment. | Many states apply an exemption to the workers' compensation system for "casual" employment, although the majority also requires that the employment not be within the employer's regular course of business. | What is Social Security Disability Insurance? |

| The Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program was created through the Social Security Act of 1935 to partially replace an individual's lost earnings due to a physical or mental impairment that prevents the individual from working. A qualified disabled worker's condition is one that leaves the individual unable to engage in any substantial gainful activity by reason of a medically determinable impairment that has lasted or is expected to last at least twelve months, or to end in death. | The LHWCA provides medical benefits, compensation for lost wages, and rehabilitative services. Additionally, should an employee suffer a fatal injury, the LHWCA provides for survivor benefits and the payment of reasonable funeral expenses. Eligible survivors include not only spouses and children, but also siblings, parents, grandparents, and grandchildren.
